This video articulates the gist of the following: Gabapentin is a medication that is used for a lot of different things. We use it for back pain, nerve pains like diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia among other things. It can be a great medication but has some potential side effects and issues that you need to know about. Lyrica and its relative Neurontin or gabapentin are widely overprescribed for pain related disorders. Although approved for treating pain after shingles, evidence for their benefit remains quite sketchy. Gabapentin now ranks as one of the top drugs of abuse with at least 50% or people abusing opioids like hydrocodone and oxycodone simultaneously taking these “johnnies” or “gabbies.” In fatal drug overdoses, gabapentin often appears as a contributing factor. Gabapentin is a structural analogue of GABA but still it doesn't act on GABA receptors. Interestingly the drug blocks alpha2-delta1 site of calcium channels present on the presynaptic membrane. Even the main mechanism for its analgesic and anti-epileptic action of this drug is not still completely clear, the possible mechanism can be attributed to its action on presynaptic calcium channels which reduce the neurotransmitter release and thereby reduce neuronal excitation. Gabapentin is a GABA-like drug that has been used medically in the treatment of epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and other conditions. Gabapentin is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. It affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. Gabapentin is used together with other medicines to treat partial seizures in adults and children at least 3 years old. Gabapentin can cause life-threatening breathing problems, especially if you already have a breathing disorder or if you use other medicines that can make you drowsy or slow your breathing. Seek emergency medical attention if you have very slow breathing. Take gabapentin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Gabapentin is approved to prevent and control partial seizures, relieve postherpetic neuralgia after shingles and moderate-to-severe restless legs syndrome. Gabapentin is available in both branded and generic forms. Gabapentin is a prescription medication known as a gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogue. GABA reduces the excitability of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain, which play a role in seizures and the transmission of pain signals. Gabapentin mirrors the effects of GABA calming excited neurons.
