The trace element selenium is indispensable to thyroid function. Yet: Many individuals suffer from selenium deficiency – especially vegetarians and vegans.

By contrast, iodine deficiencies have become much more rare, although they are still encountered in clinical practice because many patients avoid iodine. Nevertheless, the thyroid requires iodine to produce hormones—here the main principle is not-too-little and not-too-much.

Vitamin D is not only important for bone metabolism, but also for the immune system and for patients with autoimmune diseases of the thyroid.
