In waters near the coastal town of Rameswaram in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu, villagers are working hard to cultivate seaweed on bamboo rafts. The marine plants could help rejuvenate coastal habitats and wetland areas, which are known to absorb five times more carbon than terrestrial forests. Marine scientists say seaweed could help reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, at the same time as it provides a sustainable livelihood for people in often marginalised coastal communities.
